Personally, I am happy to know
how to blend just for my own home use. The knowledge of fragrance oil
blending is truly the most empowering area of making your own candles and
soaps. I add fragrance oils to just about everything but shampoo these
days. I am finding I have to draw the line on my seriously processed hair
leaving that to the experts. I use fragrance oils in place of essential oils in
most cases with no problems sense fragrance oils are just a little less in cost
then essential oils and work just as well. Ready to have some fun......
Basic Guidelines for scent blending
Here are some guidelines for scent
blending:
A perfume is made up of top
notes, which is what you smell when you first apply the scent (lavender, lemon,
lime, orange, neroli, etc.) This fades to the middle notes which are the main
scent (jasmine, rose, ylang, geranium, etc.) and base notes (sandalwood,
oakmoss, patchouli, myrrh, labdanum, frankincense, vanilla, balsam peru, etc.)
which act as fixatives and make the scent last.
Care must be used, since these
can easily overpower a blend.
A good guideline for scent blending perfume is 3 parts (or about 50%) top note, 2 parts (about 33%) middle note and 1 part (about 17%) base note. Once the blend is made, it is diluted in a base of alcohol, jojoba oil, etc
